When we were young our parents taught us that the saying, “The grass isn’t always greener…” is usually true metaphorically. Today, scientific data is proving that grass isn’t always “green”, agriculturally, as we once thought.

Yes it is true that grasses are photosynthetic living organisms that take in CO2 and sunlight and release oxygen. However, new research found that the total estimate for net negative greenhouse gas emissions due to lawn care is four times larger than the amount of carbon sequestered (removed) by grass. In other words, lawn maintenance produces four times more bad greenhouse emissions then the net good oxygen grass makes.
Mowing the 40 million acres of lawn in the United States requires over 800 million gallons of gas every year. That translates to 16 billion pounds of CO2 into the atmosphere when we cut grass. That contributes to 5% of the nations air pollution in the form of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, volatile organic compounds, nitrogen oxides and particulate matter. This is partly because lawn mower engines produce eleven times more emissions than car engines.

None of this data is including the transportation of the actual gas itself. First is transportation of gas to the gas station, then to you or to your lawn service transporting it to your location. Even if all lawn cutting machinery was electric, which will not happen soon if at all, the electricity still comes from the power grid. This would also requires millions of more toxic, flammable batteries to be produced that would eventually be poisoning landfills with deadly elements that are not easily recyclable.

Furthermore, the production and distribution of lawn chemicals and water for irrigation purposes adds even more CO2 to the atmosphere. Speaking of water, 30 to 60 percent of urban fresh water is used on lawns. Most is wasted due to evaporation and run off. That comes out to be nearly 8 billion gallons of water EACH DAY for lawn irrigation. Lets not forget fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides that cause nitrates to pollute waterways and toxins that can eventually poison us and our ground water wells and aquifers. Maintaining grass lawns increases greenhouse gases, pollutes ecosystems, wastes water and diminishes biodiversity making lawns expensive, unsustainable and a poor investment. It is a fact that now, one out of two people will get some form of cancer or other serious health issues directly contributed to ingesting and or exposure to pesticides, herbicides and PFAS from our so called “food.” Adding carcinogenic soil additives to our lawns around our homes where our kids play will only make things worse.

You’re probably thinking, “This guy really hates grass!”, but I don’t, I just want to educate and inform as many people as possible so that we can “do things better” than we’ve done and that there are consequences to ignorance and not caring enough “to do things better”. The wild natural grasslands we do not interfere with and ruin are so important and net positive for the planet, so the only “turf war” I’m waging is in the suburbs.

If you absolutely just love having a lawn and nothing else will do, than grow it sustainably with these helpful guidelines.
Only water at night otherwise the sun can evaporate most of it before it gets to the roots.
Only water according to your city’s guidelines of even or odd days etc.
Only water until you see water running down your driveway and into the gutter and street. Most could cut their water time in half due to wasting it with runoff.
Increase the time in between cuttings by just a few days.
5) Only use clean soil fertilizers or amendments like “Sand to Soil” (discussed below) that have no pesticides or carcinogenic ingredients.

I’m done with the lawn lashing, but there is just one more “WTF” fact you should know. There is a very well known OTC name brand fertilizer/plant food that is most likely in your shed or already in your lawn and garden. This soil additive contains these noticeable pretty blue crystals. If you use this product regularly in your vegetable garden, let’s just say it would be a “Miracle” if you don’t “Grow” cancer in you. Those are not magical plant nutrient sapphires from mother nature but instead copper sulfate particles from most likely Monsanto since they are partners with the the parent company. Copper sulfate has been a registered pesticide since 1956 and has been shown to increase risk of kidney cancer plus it’s also a bactericide that is extremely harmful to the health of the soil.-WTF! So your tomatoes and roses might grow a little bigger and faster but so might your tumors!
